I have two teams that come to mind - the 2014 LeTourneau University baseball team and the 2006-07 Texas A&M University-Commerce women's basketball team. I had the privilege of working with both teams in my first years at each institution. The 2014 LeTourneau University baseball team was picked to finish last in the preseason poll of league head coaches. After three sweeps of conference teams, the team started to garner attention by the media and more importantly, on a national stage with votes in national polls. The team entered the conference tournament as the No. 2 seed but to advance to the national tournament - the team was going to have to win the tournament and against No. 1 seed and host Concordia (Texas). The team managed to pull off the upset and win the conference tournament in a winner take-all championship game, coincidentally on Mother's Day. Separated from the team, I worked to garner the attention notoriety and recognition as they traveled home with the first conference title in program as well as school history. The media managed to come out to cover the team and the team was prevalent on the local television stations and newspaper. I worked with our athletic director and coaching staff to get the team on to the NCAA Regionals in McMinnville, Oregon and Linfield College. As a school with notoriety for its aviation program, we had student-athletes who were aviation majors who eased the travel pains to first-time flyers in the program. The run to the championship in the regular season and subsequently in the post season have provided me memories of a lifetime. The other team was the 2006-07 Texas A&M University-Commerce women's basketball team. Picked to win the regular season conference division title, the Lions answered the call by winning the regular season title and the right to host the conference tournament. En route to winning the conference title, the team roster was dwindled down to eight players. I was fortunate to travel to all the home and away conference games with the team along with our broadcaster and build relationships with the student-athletes and coaches. I was able to garner media attention in the hometown media for all eight players, who came to A&M-Commerce from various parts of the country. After successfully winning the conference title, the challenge of a new territory - the NCAA Regional Tournament - was before this team. The Lions entered the tournament as the No. 4 seed and managed to defeat the No. 5 seed, No. 3 seed and No. 1 seed all en route to its first-ever regional title. The three victories all came by a total of six points. As the SID, I was able to take with me - the sports editor and a photographer for the school newspaper to help cover the event. With winning the regional title, A&M-Commerce reached the Elite Eight for the first time in program history. The team traveled to the Elite Eight in Kearney, Nebraska. The Lions lost their opening round game but the memories of working with that team are some of the fondest memories that I have as a Sports Information Director.
