I’ll be entering my eighth year at Covenant in 2019-20 and being in one position for so many years means that I’ve tried many different initiatives to drum up support and excitement for the athletic programs.
So for 2019-20, it will be more about enhancing what we already do, rather than tearing down and starting fresh.
One thing that I started doing a few years ago, was making sure that our student-athletes’ voices were heard and seen beyond the box score/game recap/highlight video. Three years ago, I started the series “In My Words” (Link) during the annual D3 Week to get senior athletes to talk about their time at Covenant. Written in their own words (I edit very little) lets our fans and prospective students see what it means to be a part of the culture we have at Covenant. Building off this, we plan to have a one-minute question and answer video series with one or two athletes from each sport to be shared throughout the year, in addition to more installments of “In My Words.”
We will sprinkle in a few new wrinkles to items that have become standard here at Covenant, but again the theme is trying to deliver content that is unique. We will continue to do game highlight videos, photo galleries and a whole host of other things.
We also plan to make the jump to NCAA Live Stats for all three sports offered. My talented assistant, Adam Belford, will oversee that production. We plan to not only do stats ourselves, but get a couple student-workers to handle a sport or two. Having been in on a few sessions with the Genius people on volleyball, I’m really excited about the software and how easy it is to input. Soccer also seems very doable and basketball should be better in year number two.
Above all, the year will bring challenges as my wife and I adjust to having two kids. Our daughter, Abigail, was born in late July and our son turned five-years old later in the month. It’s a full house at the Mindeman complex, but we are blessed with so much good stuff. Being able to prioritize them, along with my duties as an adjunct professor at Covenant, is always a work in progress and something to be adjusted as the year goes on.
Looking forward to another great year from the Scots and the athletic communications team!
